A U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR) can sponsor their relatives for visas. There are two types of visas: immigrant visas for immediate relatives and family-based immigrant visas. Immediate relative immigrant visas can be issued to the following types of relatives of a U.S. citizen:
Spouse (fiancée);
Unmarried children under 21 years of age;
Foreign orphans legally adopted in a foreign country;
Foreign orphan who will be legally adopted in the U.S. and
Parent of a U.S. citizen over the age of 21
Family Preference Categories
Family preference immigrant visas may be issued to relatives who qualify under the following family preference categories:
Preference #1: Unmarried children and minor grandchildren of U.S. citizens
Preference #2: Spouses, minor children, and unmarried children over the age of 21 of lawful permanent residents (LPRs)
Preference #3: Married children of U.S. citizens, their spouses, and minor children
Preference #4: Siblings of U.S. citizens over the age of 21, their spouses, and minor children
